Kids Poetry Competition
part of TEIGNMOUTH POETRY FESTIVAL 2016
Not just for wrinklies…
Our first Kids’ Poetry Competition, organised by Neil Howell and fully sponsored by Morrisons, was a great success, attracting 38 entries in two age groups: 11 and under, and 12 - 16.
It was judged by our own Graham Burchell, who was deeply impressed by the great efforts the young people had made in writing their poems. Graham – and all of us in the TAAG gallery for the awards ceremony – were also impressed by the confident way these young people presented their work.
Winner in the younger age group was Piran Wills, 9, a pupil at Our Lady and St Patrick’s School; second Yasmin Baines, 11, of Shaldon Primary School.
Winner of the older group was Hollie Coombs, 12, of Teignmouth Community School; second Danielle Roberts, 12, of Trinity School.
Four other young poets were highly commended: Leah Heath, 10; Scarlett Johnstone, 11; Daniel Mountford, 12; Megan Allsop, 12.
Morrisons donated packs of writing materials and vouchers for £10 and £5 to the first and second place poets in each group. All other entrants at the prizegiving received goodie bags of notepads, pens and pencils from Morrisons.
Sandra Foster, Morrisons’ Teignmouth Champion, was delighted to have been involved and pledged to support a similar festival event next year.
